What to Wear for Windy Autumn Riding: A Windbreaker Layering Guide

VEL DE REIS women's windbreaker for autumn riding

On an autumn morning at the yard, the air may be crisp even when the afternoon turns mild. A riding windbreaker offers a light, considered outer layer for dry, exposed conditions. It should sit neatly over a training shirt and allow the same freedom of movement you expect from your riding clothes.

Start with a comfortable base layer

Choose a training top that lets you move through the shoulders and arms. On mild days, a short-sleeve technical shirt may be enough beneath a windbreaker; in cooler weather, add a suitable long-sleeve layer. Avoid stacking so many garments that you feel tension when you bring your hands forward or turn through your torso.

What should a riding windbreaker do?

A windbreaker should help reduce the effect of wind while remaining comfortable during active riding. The VEL DE REIS Women's Windbreaker and Men's Windbreaker use lightweight flexible fabric, full-length zips and raised collars. Zipped pockets give you a secure place for small items when you are walking the course or working at the stable. Their clean silhouettes reflect the understated VEL DE REIS approach to equestrian dress, while the flexible construction is intended to move with the rider rather than flap or bunch.

Try it in a riding position

Put on the actual layers you plan to wear. Reach for the reins, bend your elbows, sit and lean forward. The sleeves should not pull high, and the hem should stay comfortable around the waist and saddle. Check that cuffs and collars do not interfere with your gloves or helmet straps. Use the product size chart and allow room for the layers beneath, especially if you sit between sizes.

When to switch to a waterproof jacket

A windbreaker is for wind and light changing conditions. If steady rain is likely, pack a dedicated women's or men's waterproof jacket. Keep a dry change of clothes for after the ride and follow the garment's care instructions when you get home.

For a show-day decision between the two layers, see our waterproof jacket or windbreaker guide. Check event rules before wearing outerwear in competition; what works for training or stable work may differ from the required arena outfit.
